I understand there are debt relief companies, but should I be wary of them, what are they really like to work with?

I have high debts on my credit card, the interest rate is currently 12% and I have monthly payments of $475, I have been building this up for almost 20 years and it has just gone crazy.

Anyway I still have a decent credit score about 770 last time I checked, so i don’t really want to ruin this by declaring bankruptcy. So is there another way to do it?

I know you can get medical bills down, I was wondering if I could get my payments down to say $50 a month, that would really be great. If it makes any difference, I am disabled and receive SSDI, so there could be something the government run? Thanks for all suggestions.

Some additional points, I don’t have any real assets, car, house etc, and if I get sued could this have a knock on effect on my SSDI check?

I have a small business… sole proprietorship…. i’m having to file personal bankruptcy…mostly credit card debt and medical bills. Can I protect my business assets (my computers and some other stuff are exempt under Ch 7, but not office furniture which exceeds the personal exemption) if i convert it to a corporation a few months before filing?
